Michelle has a master’s degree in psychology and licenses for both teaching and school administration. She taught middle and high school English and social studies classes in Bloomington and Brooklyn Center before stepping out of the classroom to take a position as a school technology integrationist. In this position, she encouraged teachers to move from basic levels of technology integration to transformational practices with intense professional development designed to guide students to demonstrate a deep understanding of the curriculum through the creation of multimedia content, complex communication in a variety of media, and publication of meaningful work online. Michelle has become well-respected amongst the educational technology community in the twin cities area, and has been asked to present at many conferences and workshops, including as a featured speaker at the TIES Educational Technology conference.
Michelle became interested in urban school reform, and took on the position of Turn-Around School Officer to turn around an underachieving secondary school. The school is now off the state’s list of priority schools, having shown substantial improvement in reading and math proficiency and achievement gap reduction in the past three years. Currently, Michelle is a district data and accountability officer in Brooklyn Center, overseeing data and accountability measures through project management, and overseeing the implementation of the district technology plan. She is also an accomplished grant writer, having written alone many successful grant applications, resulting in close to a million dollars for the district, and close to another four million dollars in grants written in collaboration with others. She currently oversees all district title, integration, and career and technical education, and compensatory dollars, and works closely with the business office to ensure alignment of funding with district priorities.
